So Tim, how long have you been working at Medieval Times?

Somebody else would be prolly be sad if they were sitting in their empty apartment on a Friday night with a glass of scotch, a bag of kettle chips, a guitar, and Garden State to keep them company. Somebody else would have their priorities severely misaligned.

P.S. Between John Roberts and the renminbi, today was totally a four paper (NYT, FT, WSJ, WaPo) day, and those are the best. days. ever.

Set Adrift on Memory Bliss

Dude, I am on this insane nostalgia kick right now. I just got back in touch with, like, my best friend from 7th grade through college, who I haven't talked to since I packed up and headed to Boston.

Speaking of 7th grade, I've gotta say that King's Quest is as awesome as it ever was. Also PM Dawn.

Observations

1) SIdeways is kind of like Swingers: The Next Generation.

2) Girls who read Krugman are so hot.

Tak!

These are some really ugly posters I bought on e-Bay. Rest assured, I'll be putting them up in my room. Oh yes.

I think Yulia Tymoshenko has to be the hottest prime minister ever. She'd prolly still be even if there were any close competition.

A Gestating Classic?

How long does a record have to stay awesome before it can safely be called a classic? I want to make sure that Happyness by the Aluminum Group can officially be conidered a classic before I yell at everyone who doesn't have it.

In the interim though, if you don't have it, what's your freakin' problem? Don't you like good things? I bet you don't. I bet you're like, "No, I don't think it would be fun to have an awesome record. I'd rather repeatedly prick myself with a safety pin while I listen to The Downward Spiral on repeat."

Chariots of Fire

So I learned this weekend that it's a mistake to listen to music that I think will get me "psyched" when trying to run long distances. I just end up running way too fast and tiring myself out too soon. This sucks, because I totally came up with the best ever mix to get, you know, psyched. It had a good mix of aggro (if I ever get my hands around that dude's throat...) and bouncy, and it went like this:

Annie - "Heartbeat"
Belle & Sebastian - "Dear Catastrophe Waitress"
Calexico - "Crystal Frontier"
Big Black - "L Dopa"
Fog - "We're Winning"
Kelly Clarkson - "Since U Been Gone"
Cursive - "The Radiator Hums"
Erlend Oye - "Sheltered Life/A Fine Day"
Katamari Damacy - "Katamari on the Rock"
The Good Life - "Lovers Need Lawyers"
David Kilgour - "Today is Gonna Be Mine"
Edan - "Funky Voltron"

God damn, that's got my heart going just writing that. I definitely need to get back to the Joanna Newsom & Neutral Milk Hotel.

Also, I dearly hope that I'm the only person ever to put Big Black and Kelly Clarkson together on a mix.

Why You Shouldn't Read Hot Chocolate Boy

Has hot chocolate boy become my forum for giving voice to my ridiculous crushes? I'm afraid so--that and the occasional tirade about Chinese monetary policy... apparently. That said, consider yourself warned.

Okay, so I feel like something needs to be said about how cute the new crop of Mount Sinai med students are. I don't get over to the hospital/campus that much, but I had some stuff to do over there today, and yowza! Where are the awkward mousy bookish types? Apparently they're at Columbia or something. Seriously. Wow.

God bless the 11 AM Gilmore Girls on the Family Channel. It's the one that's sandwiched between The 700 Club and a Full House rerun.

Now that I think about, yea and also please bless the 5 PM Girls that is sandwiched between 7th Heaven and a Full House rerun.

Amen.

Doin' It

It's starting to warm up, which means that there's all kinds of irrational doin'-it related goings on in my head. Why do I have to be like some kind of animal that feels like it has to rub up against something just because the air around me gets warmer? I don't know, but I clearly am that kind of animal.

So is Jeff R. of Wigu and Overcompensating. To wit:
Girls

Fine.

For the record, this is the list of the celebrity ladies for whom I am personally gaga (in no particular order):

Mary-Louise Parker
Lauren Graham
Natalie Portman
Katrina Vanden Heuvel

If you are one of these women, and find it endearing that some guy put your name on the short-list of his celebrity crushes, drop me a note. I will buy you a sandwich.

Look! A Web-log!

You know what? I was just looking through the old HCB archives, and it turns out it was actually some good, disastrously insubstantial stuff. so I think it might be time to resurrect it. Let's see how this goes...

Pernice Bros.: Awesomely Funny or Funnily Awesome?

This isn't the first thing I've written about the Pernice Bros. today, but it might (repeat: might) be the last. I finally got around to watching the new videos the band made for two of the tracks off of last year's predictably awesome Yours, Mine, and Ours. The one for "The Weakest Shade of Blue" is an epic depiction of the age-old struggle between karate kids and ballerinas. It is certifiably hi-larious.

Go watch the video. Then buy the record. Then buy all the other records.

I have to admit, my love of Joe Pernice reaches almost Portmanesque heights.

Twoo Wuv

So, things didn't work out quite as well as I'd hoped last night, but we'll see what happens. At any rate, here are some lessons I learned from the experience:

1) In the movie Where the Heart Is, they gave Natalie Portman Angela Basset's boobs. So, at some point, Angela Basset had to have casts taken of her chest. Nice work if you can get it.

2) Natalie Portman is absolutely gorgeous, and ridiculously smart.

3) Either James Lipton's sycophantic tendencies aren't so obnoxious when you get to see the whole interview, or he just doesn't come off as being as disingenuous when the object of his fawning is as talented, poised, and articulate as Ms. Portman.

So, in conclusion, me likey Natalie.

I'm a Lucky Bastard

Natalie

So, I'm gonna go see Natalie Portman tape her Inside the Actor's Studio tonight. I'm looking forward to the part where Natalie sees me from the stage and falls instantly in love with me. The way I see it, the only thing that could get in the way of that happening would be if I were to just snap and manually eviscerate James Lipton.

What's perhaps a more likely scenario is that Natalie will fall in love with me ('cause I've got it like that), and then I'll tear Lipton's guts out with my hands. That's when his students will hoist Nat and I on their shoulders and carry us off into our new life together.

So, if I don't see you guys for a while, that's probably why.

Now we just need to get him a tiny Sox jersey and we'll be all set.

Salsa

So, I totally thought I was kidding when I said that I'd use this space to talk about how much I like GOYA brand mexican food products, but it turns out I wasn't. I just made this outstanding egg & cheese sandwich, made all the more delicious by the addition by GOYA brand Salsa Taquera. It's hot, but with a hint of sweetness--almost like barbeque sauce. Nice.

Also, GOYA's Salsa Verde is absolutely the best value for your salsa dollar. It's really the best kept secret in salsa.

Lite Rawk, Baby!

I love Ken Stringfellow so much that it might be borderline retarded. I mean, I guess it makes sense since he's got, like, the best pedigree in the history of pop music (Posies, REM, and fucking Big Star), but he is to melody as Lou Ferrigno is to green body paint.

The new record, Soft Commands, is straight up Mellow Gold. It's great and I love it, but I'm really hooked on Touched. It's just pure pop confection. It's rock candy.

I'd find it disturbing that I'm so into this adult-contemporary lite-rock if it wasn't so fucking good.

Totally Fucking Obsessed

Q: What do you get when you cross the content of my first post of today (RE: West Wing) with the content of the second (RE: Quizzes)?

A: A quiz about The West Wing, obvs. It tells you which West Winger you are. This is what happened when I did it:

Powerful. Intimidating. Trivia Nazi. President Bartlet is all of these and more. A super-nerd who's into chess, National Parks, and rambling off things in Latin, POTUS is the 'real thing.' Not being completely upfront with the American people may cause him re-election headaches, though...

:: Which West Wing character are you? ::

Okay, I'm seriously going to go register for that lab now.

News to Me

s070_020

According to this quiz at OnTheIssues, I'm a "moderate liberal." What the hell is that about? I've never been a moderate anything! I've always considered myself to be pretty self-aware, politically speaking, but apparently there's a Java applet out there somewhere that has a better read on my political sensitvities than I do.

A Severe Problem

I have a rather distressing problem. I honestly can't stop watching The West Wing. It's on Bravo at two separate times every day (with two different seasons!) and my mailbox is overflowing with episodes from Netflix.

If somebody could please just come over to my apartment and, with some combination of non-stick cooking spray and emergency extrication tools, remove me from my couch and make me go uptown to register for my chem lab (because for some fucking reason, i have to do it in person), that'd be great.

Although, it's clearly an act of divine providence that caused Bravo to schedule a WW marathon for Monday, the day before I start classes.

Yeah, More Politics

Look. For reals, I'm sorry that things around here and at greenideas have been veering towards politics lately. It's just, you know, there's an election in 63 days and I'm starting to fixate.

I did want to mention, in the interests of full disclosure, that I gave some money to the Democratic Party today. I don't say that because I think you should do the same (but you should do the same). I just want everything on the up-and-up here.

While we're here, I signed up to be a DNC eCaptain, mostly so I can get the e-mail updates, but if anybody wants to join my ePrecinct and get e-mails from me with "inside information" from the Party, drop me a line.

I Get It, I Get It

Is it just me, or is allmusic pushing Matthew Dear extra hard? They've had a "spotlight" on him on their front page for the last several days. At first, I was all "okay, that's cool." But now I'm like, "dude."

Seriously though, "Dog Days" is "good" and "innovative" and it "revitalizes microhouse," but why does allmusic have such a hard-on for him these days?

The Power of Science

This week, I had the distinct pleasure of supplying the Columbia University bookstore with $555. In return, I received a muscle-rending load of textbooks, solution manuals, and study guides in mathematics and the physical sciences. All of this just so I can have the privilege of surrendering every last paltry free moment for the next two years to the altar of higher education. When that's done, all I have to look forward to is getting totally Push Fluids on your collective ass.

Do I sound bitter? Here's the punchline: I'm totally not! Look, I know that these personal posts are total bullshit, but I'm just totally psyched today. After floundering in the academy for a solid year, I just couldn't be happier that I'm working towards getting my hands dirty in some genuinely rewarding pursuits.

Hells, and might I add, yeah.

P.S. Quiz Show is a very. good. movie.

A Quandry

CD36So, there's this aspiring pop-star in China. His name is Mao Hai (I think), and his body is covered in hair, in the venerable tradition of other so-called "hair children."

If you want to learn more about him, you can read "Meet 'Hair Child' Singer by Coincidence" or "Do Not Fight But the Sad Feeling of First Love."

I can't for the life of me figure out whether or not it's acceptable to think this is hilarious. To be sure, I have no doubts as to its overwhelming hilarity. My problem concerns the morality of revelling in said hilarity versus just, you know, letting it go.

Dirty Little Secret

2004_01_23_wonketteDoes it signal some sort of deep-seated character flaw in me that I totally have a crush on Wonkette? Yes. Yes it does.

On a completely unrelated note, I just saw the US synchronized swimmers doing the robot. I feel as if such an event should not pass without comment. Something somewhere just got completely out of hand and, for the life of me, I don't know what it is!
